Айзек Азимов родился в России, под Смоленском. В младенческом возрасте эмигрировал с семьей в США, в 1923 году, и вскоре стал гражданином этой страны. Помимо научно-фантастических творений, его перу принадлежат многие научные-популярные труды, коих, впрочем, я не читал; знаю лишь что их было действительно много и по разной тематике: математика, астрономия, физика, химия, биология, география, история... Что же до художественной литературы, то прежде всего отмечу сериал "Основание" ("Foundation") и его знаменитые рассказы о роботах с их тремя правилами. В общем писать умел и писал очень много.

Маргарет Вейс/Трейси Хикмен (Margareth Weis/Tracy Hickman)

Пара писателей, упоминающихся вместе в силу их совместной деятельности. На пару они сотворили визитную карточку одного из основных миров системы настольных ролевых игр AD&D - Кринна. Трилогия Dragonlance, обозванная в переводе на русский "Сагой о копье". Как в компании TSR умеют писать санта-барбары с колдунами и оборотнями - прекрасно известно; множество писателей не особо высокого уровня занимаются этим в соответствии с заказами. Что касается этих двух товарищей, то по мне они все же выделяются из общей массы и их перу принадлежит львиная доля книг из более чем сотен под маркой Dragonlance. Это книги в стиле heroic fantasy, начавшиеся с... настольной игры, где, если не ошибаюсь, Вейс и Хикмен были одними из игроков. Так вот и ценность этих книг так же в пособии как проводить такие игры; весьма интересно, зная правила AD&D, распознавать игровую механику в процессе чтения.
Впрочем, до сих пор продолжая работать на TSR (видать денег куры не клюют уже :-), писатели и "своего" писали не мало. К примеру, сериал "Deathgate cycle", который на русском языке издан в виде 6 из 7 книг. Но вот от себя им не уйти, их почерк легко угадывается в тех же крэзилунерских мотивах; и вот меня, их большого ценителя, уже начинают бесить, ибо будь то Dragonlance, Deathgate или вообще сай-файная вещь о Крисе-Киборге - везде одно и то же. Жаль что они не могут разносторонее раскрыть свой талант...

Роберт Джордан (Robert Jordan)

Роберт Джордан - это псевдоним, не единственный, под которым писал Джеймс Оливер Ригни младший. Известен прежде всего циклом "Колесо Времени", многотомным повествованищем (sic!) про некоего Ранда Ал'Тора. Каждый том этого сериала опубликован в нескольких книгах; томов на данный момент восемь и даже автор наверно еще не знает сколько их будет. Книги интересные, но быстро приедаются постоянные "краткие содержания предыдущих серий" и прочее тому подобное. Временами на полкниги не фэнтези, а какой-то женский любовный роман. Впрочем, в процессе идет как бы несколько сюжетных линий, некоторые из которых и спасают положение.
Кроме этого сериала Ригни в жанре фэнтези писал что-то о Конане (та еще тема :-) и был с кем-то в соавторстве, а все прочее не оставило следа в анналах истории.

Роджер Желязны (Roger Zelazny)

Сын поляка и ирландки, родился в США в 1937 году; умер в 1995. Написал достаточно много романов и знаменит в массах прежде всего своими Хрониками Амбера, десятитомным сериалом. Правда стоит заметить, что не все из томов мне понравились. Все-таки сериалы писать - это понятно на что идешь, но первый том, без сомнения, весьма примечателен. Многие его отдельные романы хорошего качества, многие качества превосходного. Я бы отметил лично мои предпочтения в виде "Джека-из-Тени" и серии "Мир Волшебника" (романы "Подмененный" и "Одержимый магией").

Глен Кук (Glen Cook)

Родился в 1944 в США, остальные биографические данные не особо здесь и нужны. Кук писатель весьма замечательный, но все же слишком увлекающийся сериалами и, тем самым, гробящий свой талант.
"Хроники Черного Отряда" написаны в жанре Dark Fantasy, и повествуется там об отряде наемников в мире колдунов и вечных войн, где разделить стороны на "хороших" и "плохих" можно лишь условно. Первые томики следует прочитать всем, остальное уже на любителя. "Приключения детектива Гаррета" - истории из жизни... да, Гаррета :-), детектива в одном из миров fantasy. Оригинально, но настолько сильно от тома к тому падает качество, что лучше бы том был всего один. :-) Самым большим сериалом является по всей видимости уже заброшенная "Империя Ужаса" - причем очень многое там, по части персоналий и взаимоотношений, можно сопоставить с "Черным отрядом". "Империя Ужаса" была очень хорошей задумкой, но Кук сам в ней запутался, не сумел понять когда какую ветку следует обрубить и когда привнести действительно новую струю. Что из себя представляют рассказы и прочее, сказать не могу. Осталось заметить, что кроме fantasy Кук баловался и работами по научной фантастике.
